Merry Christmas

I haven't posted in a long time and it is nobodys fault but mine. In the the past few month I have moved from the the old house ( to be known as Old & Crusty ) to the new house ( known as New Sweetness ), the boy has changed schools, and between work, lazyness, and weather I have not done any fishing.
Hopefully the boy and I will get a chance to go up to Arkansas and fish in the White River after the new year.

Urban Flyfishing

There's a little pond by the civic center that is just full of Brim and maybe other fish as well. They where hitting any type of fly that I could cast out there. All the Brim I caught were small but I caught a bunch of them.

White River 8-01-08 + a couple of days.

Well we finally made it up to the "cabin" in Flippin to do some trout fishin, a good time was had by all. We did Cotter, Roundhouse shoals, Ranchette, and Dry Run Creek. The water was high and fast so wading was out and even boats had a hard time in the current. We caught a few trout, some carp, and a sculpin.

Hell froze over

I put my fat butt in a kayak and my wife learned to fly fish. We got are bonus check ( stimulus check ) from the government and bought another kayak, my wife ( "the wife" from here on out ) and "the boy" know how to paddle/ride them ( we have two already ) but I did not and didn't feel to safe about them, but after giving them a try they are not to bad. After "the boy" and I got tired of paddling we started fishing for Brim. Soon "the wife" comes around and wants to fish also but I did not bring any casting rods so she try a 5wgt 9ft griggs and likes it, in the past she has stated that she well fly fish, anyway to make a long story short she caught more fish than me and "the boy" combined.

Update

A lot of things have been going on lately, I quit my job a Sportsmans and bought a 7wgt TFO rod. The Sportsmsns job was fun and I learned allot but the new hours sucked and interfered with my primary job. The TFO rod is really something. It's a 9ft 7wgt rod that I will use for Bass and/or Garr.

It's that time of year

Spring is here at last and I think is is here to stay. I have been fishing alot in the past few days, with and without the boy. The big news is that I am quit my part-time job at Sportsmans, it's a happy and sad move but in the long run it is for the best. The Brim are getting ready to get on the beds and are in spring colors.

I took the boy fishing yesterday to kill some time. A storm front way starting to move in and the temp. was in the high seventies. On the boys first cast with a 3 wgt. 7 ft. TFO rood he caught a nice brim use a beaded ant/ beaded wollybugger. We only had about 20 min. to fish before the rain started pouring down be when the weather inproves alittle we well be right back at it.

A lot on my plate

It has been pretty busy for me lately. I did not go trout fishing as I had planned but I did go fishing and camping with my son this past weekend. The water was 55 degrees F. and it rained that night, but oh'well that is just the way it is sometimes. In a couple of more weeks the water should be in the 60's and the Brim should be hopping. By the way, I showed the boy how to use a fly rod today and he did fairly well with it. More next time with big fish pics hopefully.

Spillway Gar

I got a chance to do a little fishing today at the spillway at Arkabutla Lake. I was trying for Gar or anything else that might bite but had no luck. Still, it was good to get out.

That time of year

The boy had his tenth birthday on the 18th, wow it seems like it was just yesterday that he was nine. He said he would like to learn to fly fish so as soon as both of us get a little time off I'll get the 3wt. out show him how to cast. Maybe he can catch some nice Brim. Yesterday we worked on getting the boat ready for warm weather, it is one of those 10 ft. bass raider type boats, we put the fishfinder that I got for Christmas on it and cleaned it up a bit. I have been scouting out some lakes around here and have found some potential good spots. The weather around here has sucked for fly fishing. Either it is to cold for Bass and Brim or the wind is to strong, well I guess it is just a matter of time. I am thinking about taking some pics. of some of the local lakes and ponds around here and posting them.

It's trying to warm up

It's mid Febuary and it's trying to warm up outside. Good. I've done allmost no fishing in the last couple of weeks and it sucks. In about a month the boy and I are going up to the White river for about 4 or 5 days for trout. I've been scout good fishing locations using Google Maps and I hope this works.
I've been looking at getting a 7wt. rod and reel for bass, more than lickly a SanCroix or TFO rod and a Okuma reel. With the weather warming up it is time to hit the local lakes, creeks, and small rivers for bass and brim. There are a bunch of them with in a few miles of my house. I think I should start taking photos of the lakes, creeks, ect... and not just the fish I have caught. Also, I am thinking of joining the mis-south fly fishers orginization or whatever it is called.

The Itch

Yea I'm getting that itch again, that one that feels like it's way downbetween the shoulder blades. It's telling to go up to the river for more trout. Sadly it's going to have to what tell mid march when the boy has spring breack from school. I would like to get at least 4 days in the water and try a couple of differnt spots on the river.

Ramblelings

When I am waist deep in a river casting my flyrod and the trout are hitting on the flies I feel at peace with myself, one with God/nature or whatever you want to call it. Trout are the most beautiful of fish and Rainbows are the most beautiful of trout followed in a very close second by Browns. Fly fishing is like living art or art in motion and when a cast is done right it is pure magic.

NoGo on Trout

The boy and I went trout fishing at some Memphis area stocked lakes yesterday and caught ZERO fish. To be fair, not many people caught any trout. The weather was cold and windy and it was not anything like fishing a river.

Trout in Memphis

I just found out today that Tennessee stocks some lakes in Memphis and the surrounding area with trout durring the winter. I guess the fish die when the water warms up in the spring and summer. Anyway I have been feeling the need to do some more trout fishing lately and I don't want to drive up to the White river, so I give these local stocked trout a try.

New Years.

The old year is dead, long live the new year. I'm on my on rotation at work so its been no fishing for a little while. Let me explain some thing, I work 8 days on and 6 days off starting on a Wednesday and stopping on Wednesday. This coming Sunday I am suppose to go Bass fishing with a friend if the weather is good. It's not all about trout because this is the south and as far as I know there are no trout in the lakes and creeks around here, going up to The rivers in Arkansas are a weekend trip done only a few times a year. Around here it is all about Large Mouth Bass (LMB), Crappie, and Brim (BlueGill) in that order. Bass are fun fish to catch, Crappie I could care less about, and Brim are about the funnest fish on a lightweight rod (3wgt.) that one could every catch. Big Brim that are larger than ones open hand can be had from almost any large lake or pond.
